Liam Hendriks to throw live BP on Friday

by Jordan Lazowski

Liam Hendriks is one step closer to making his return to the big leagues.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported this morning that Liam Hendriks will be heading to Chicago this week following the completion of his rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte. Once he returns to Chicago, he will throw live BP on Friday and, should all go well, be activated soon after.

Hendriks has been out for the whole season after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January. He went through his last round of chemotherapy on April 5th. On April 20th, he announced he was cancer free. In six rehab appearances with Charlotte, Hendriks has struggled a bit in regaining his old ways, giving up six runs in five innings of work, including three home runs. However, as a 34-year-old with a long career of closing in the big leagues, there’s likely an element of just being impatient and ready to get back to the big leagues at this point.

Regardless of minor league results, the three-time All-Star will add much-needed help to the struggling bullpen that has recently seen the return of Garrett Crochet. Since signing with the White Sox, Hendriks has pitched in 128.2 IP with 75 saves while also holding a 2.66 ERA in that time frame.

As the team gives more information, we will continue to provide updates.
