Yoan Moncada to miss three weeks with right oblique injury

by Joe Binder

Prior to tomorrow afternoon’s Opening Day contest in Detroit, the White Sox announced 12 roster moves.

Perhaps the biggest of them all involves third baseman Yoan Moncada, who is heading to the IL with a Grade 1 right oblique strain. GM Rick Hahn is estimating Moncada to miss roughly three weeks of action, though it could be slightly shorter if all goes well.

Also heading to the 10-day injured list will be RHPs Ryan Burr (retroactive to April 4; right shoulder strain), Joe Kelly (retroactive to April 4; right biceps nerve injury) and Lance Lynn (retroactive to April 4; right knee surgery to repair torn tendon), LHP Garrett Crochet (retroactive to April 4; left elbow surgery), and OF Yermín Mercedes (retroactive to April 4; left hamate fracture).

In addition, infielder Jake Burger and right-handed pitcher Matt Foster have been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks and right-handed pitcher Kyle Crick are also heading to the show, with the club selecting their contracts. Meanwhile, catcher Seby Zavala has been sent down to the Queen City with the newly acquired Reese McGuire claiming the back-up role. To top all of this off, outfielder Micker Adolfo is out of options and has been designated for assignment.

Following the aforementioned moves, Chicago’s 28-player Opening Day roster includes a total of 14 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders, and five outfielders. Here’s a full breakdown:
