White Sox closer Seranthony Dominguez secured the victory for the Dominican Republic, while Joseph Contreras struck out two in his final outing of the tournament.
Here’s a full look at the Monday WBC performances from players with White Sox ties.
Team Australia (2-2)
Curtis Mead (3B)
1-for-2, BB
Curtis Mead reached twice in what would be Australia’s final game of the tournament. He singled up the middle in his first at-bat, and later reached via a walk to conclude his WBC run, having gone 5-for 14 at the dish. Mead will now return to camp in Glendale, where he’ll look to secure his place on the Opening Day roster.
FINAL: Korea 7, Australia 2 | Box Score
Team Dominican Republic (3-0)
Seranthony Dominguez (RHP)
1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Seranthony Dominguez sealed the deal for the Dominican Republic, striking out two of the three batters he faced in the 9th inning. The 10-1 win for the DR, highlighted by Fernando Tatis Jr.‘s grand slam, means they have clinched a spot in the upcoming quarterfinals.
FINAL: Dominican Republic 10, Israel 1 | Box Score
Team Great Britain (1-3)
Trayce Thompson
0-for-1, 3 BB, 2 R, SB
Why do we like Trayce Thompson? Because he gets on base, at least just this once. The former White Sox outfielder reached three times and came around to score on two occasions as Great Britain closed out their WBC with a win.
Team Brazil (0-4)
Joseph Contreras
1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Command continues to plague the son of Jose Contreras in this year’s World Baseball Classic. The 17-year-old high-schooler walked three while surrendering two earned runs on two hits in just over an inning of work. Brazil was eliminated with the loss, making this the last appearance for Contreras in this year’s tourney.
Final: Great Britain 8, Brazil 1 | Box Score
Team Cuba (2-1)
Yoan Moncada (3B)
0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Alexei Ramirez (INF)
0-for-1, K
Both former White Sox bats fell silent in Team Cuba’s first loss in pool play to the hosting squad in Puerto Rico yesterday. Cuba did give an at-bat to 44-year-old Alexei Ramirez who struck out, but it was nice to see him on a diamond again.
Cuba will fight for a tournament spot tomorrow against Canada, regardless of its result against Puerto Rico. The exact outcome is fluid, but it’s a win and the Cubans advance.
FINAL: Cuba 1, Puerto Rico 4 | Box Score
Team Nicaragua
Cheslor Cuthbert (INF)
0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Former Sox infielder Chelsor Cuthbert didn’t have a day worth remembering in Team Nicaragua’s final loss. They may not see the WBC for some time if they can’t re-qualify, but Cuththroat action was, indeed, had.
FINAL: Venezuela 4, Nicaragua 0 | Box Score
