Five individual players within the White Sox organization will play for teams abroad this spring in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Here we’ll provide you with daily updates on how each performed, starting with one player from down under.
Curtis Mead, 3B
Australia vs. Chinese Taipei
- 2-for-4, K
It was the Mead mash these past two days as he had a fairly good day, sparking offense for an Australia squad who pulled off a 3-0 upset over #2 globally ranked Taiwan. The first hit of the tournament came from Mead after a controversial ball call, which could not be overturned without ABS.
Apart from that, Australia tailed off the back of a good start from former Baltimore Oriole Alex Wells, who found six strikeouts in three innings. Pitching was ultimately what silenced bats against Australia, with Taiwan collecting only three hits. Guardians prospect Travis Bazzana also tacked on a solo homer that pushed the Aussies over the edge in their first pool.
Australia vs. Czech Republic
- 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R
Mead dominated against the Czech Republic, putting his mark on a 5-1 win to move the Aussies to 2-0 in pool play. A silent day in most aspects for Australia as it was pitching again that moved them forward, but he clobbered a ball for a three-run bomb early to get the scoring started. He is hitting .500 to start the WBC and could fight his way to a roster spot in Chicago if he keeps these efforts up against great pitching staffs.
