White Sox win one, lose one in Friday’s split-squad action

The White Sox split Friday’s games, securing a win at home against the Rangers while dropping their road game to the Brewers. Here’s a full recap of today’s action!

Game 1: White Sox (SS) 3, Rangers 1

In the only game with video today, the White Sox pitching staff wrangled the Rangers bats in, taking a 3-1 win. The Cactus League match up saw offenses as barren as the desert of Scottsdale, apart from the fourth inning.

Making his first start of the spring was a familiar face in Erick Fedde. The 2024 standout opened his second stint with the Sox in strong fashion, firing two hitless innings while striking out two.

After Feddeccini, the pitching was great, with the only hiccup being Mike Vasil surrendering a run to Cameron Cauley. He was out there the longest, tossing three total frames, two being scoreless. Vasil picked up four strikeouts before making way for Grant Taylor, whose fastball touched 99.6 MPH in his one-inning jam.

Offensively, LaMonte Wade Jr. was the deciding factor after the Rangers scored early in the fourth. He belted a slider over the wall in right, for a 2-1 lead. Wade’s struggles have continued, with an OBP at a mere .167, but the homer was a nice addition to maybe jump-start his spring. Later that inning, legendary manager Dusty Baker’s son, Darren, drove Sam Antonacci in to cap the scoring.

Scoring Summary

  • Top 4: Cameron Cauley doubles on a line drive to center fielder Brooks Baldwin. Alejandro Osuna scores. Rangers lead 1-0.
  • Bottom 4: LaMonte Wade Jr. homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Austin Hays scores. White Sox lead 2-1.

Key Performers

Erick Fedde

  • 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Fedde kept Ranger bats hitless for the first two innings, handing off a cold lineup to the rest of the White Sox staff. It had a punctual ending as well, with back-to-back punchouts as he threw 19 of 29 pitches for strikes.

LaMonte Wade Jr.

  • LaMonte Wade Jr.(1B): 1-for-3, HR (1), 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

Wade had a silent day other than his bomb over the wall in right, but it did give the team a lead they would not concede.

Mike Vasil (RP)

  • 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

It was a solid day for Vasil. He put together three innings that held the White Sox in balance for a third of the contest, despite giving up a run to a searing bat. Otherwise, the righty wormed his way out of jams, and his sinker looked to create the ground balls it needs in-season.

Miguel Vargas (3B)

  • 2-for-3: 2B (1), 1B

Vargas raised his spring average to .364 with a pair of hits across the first three innings.

Game 2: Brewers 5, White Sox (SS) 2

The other half of the split squad came up short as the offense fell flat.

Edgar Quero continued to swing a hot bat, driving in Chase Meidroth twice with a first-inning single and a double in the third. The rest of the lineup was otherwise quiet, recording just six total hits and missing a prime opportunity to cut into Milwaukee’s lead in the eighth inning by stranding the bases loaded.

On the mound, right-hander Sean Burke made his second Cactus League start, allowing two earned runs over three innings. Tanner McDougal also surrendered a pair of runs across three frames, while top pitching prospect Noah Schultz punched out three over two innings of work.

Scoring Summary

  • Top 1st: Edgar Quero singles up the middle to drive in Chase Meidroth. White Sox lead 1-0.
  • Top 3rd: Edgar Quero doubles (2) on a sharp fly ball to right field, once again scoring Chase Meidroth. White Sox lead 2-0.
  • Bottom 3rd: Luis Rengifo homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Brewers trail 2-1.
  • Bottom 7th: William Contreras singles on a sharp line drive to left field, once again bringing in Joey Ortiz. Brewers lead 5-2.

Key Performers

  • 2-for-3: 2B (2), 1B, 2 RBI

Chase Meidroth (2B)

  • 1-for-1: 1B, BB, 2 R

The second baseman reached base twice and scored both times, courtesy of Quero.
