White Sox Update: Aaron Bummer, Dylan Cease, Yoan Moncada, 2020 Schedule

by Joe Binder

Happy Monday, Sox Fans! While you were busy at work, the Summer Camp kept rolling on. Here’s the latest news, notes, tweets, and quotes from the South Side.

Aaron Bummer looks filthy during live BP

Fresh off his contract extension, reliever Aaron Bummer took part in live batting practice this morning along with pitchers Steve Cishek and Dylan Cease. The lefty looked nasty in the various clips posted to social media, tripping up hitters like Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert.

The White Sox and Bummer agreed to terms on a 5-year, $16 million contract back in December, which includes two club options that could extend the deal through the 2026 season. He’ll be one of the key late-inning options for the team out of the ‘pen, along with Steve Cishek and Alex Colome.

Dylan Cease believes he’ll be ready for 5-6 innings by July 24th; willing to risk it to play

Dylan Cease met with the media after throwing in live batting practice this morning. He made several interesting comments related to playing during the pandemic and where he’ll stand from a progress standpoint come Opening Day.

As for the Robert vs. Cease matchup in live batting practice, NBC Sports Chicago’s Adam Hoge has the clip:

Yoan Moncada absent from team’s workouts

A notable player who’s been missing from all of the White Sox’s workouts to date is third baseman Yoan Moncada. When asked about his absence, Rick Renteria said that he was holding him out and couldn’t comment further on the matter.

The timing of this is interesting as it comes after the Sox announced Sunday that two players tested positive for COVID-19. Both affected individuals are asymptomatic and in isolation in Chicago, though we don’t know if Moncada is one of them due to the players’ wishes to remain private.

Luis Robert speaks with media

After making his Summer Camp debut on Sunday, Luis Robert met with the media for the first time and touched on adversity and how he plans to overcome it.

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Daryl Van Schouwen wrote an article on Robert following the call with quotes from teammates. Dylan Cease’s comment comparing the Cuban prospect to an Under Armour mannequin takes the cake.
