White Sox to promote Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte

by Joe Binder

The White Sox are finally promoting one of their hottest prospects.

As reported by Vinnie Duber, first baseman Tim Elko will be promoted from Triple-A Charlotte. The slugger is expected to be in Chicago on Saturday, though it remains to be seen how he’ll slot into the lineup.

Elko, 26, has been an intriguing name to watch in the White Sox farm system. He started as strong as anyone, as he is tied for the MiLB lead in home runs with 10 while slashing .348/.431/.670 and hitting to a 182 wRC+. His strong performance, combined with Andrew Vaughn’s slow start, has led to many fans clamoring for a promotion.

A 10th-round pick back in 2022, Elko signed for just $35,000 as a senior out of Ole Miss. While a decorated college baseball player, he was seen mostly as a money-saving draft pick, with the Sox saving over $100,000 in bonus pool money. He has far exceeded expectations since then, hitting for both power and average at every minor league level and showcasing strong leadership qualities.

While he has consistently put up strong numbers over the last couple of seasons, his play hit another gear during the first month in Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights. At his age, Elko has nothing left to prove in the minors, but now he has the opportunity to prove that he belongs in Major League Baseball.

A corresponding move has not yet been announced, but Chase Meidroth’s last-minute scratch from Friday’s lineup could indicate an injury-related roster move. As more information becomes available, we will keep you updated.
