White Sox sign third-round draft pick Adisyn Coffey, save big

by Joe Binder

The White Sox locked up the first of their five selections from last week’s MLB draft. Third-rounder Adisyn Coffey and the team have reportedly agreed to a $50,000 deal, per MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis.

Coffey, a two-way player from Wabash Valley, was selected with the 83rd overall pick that came with a slot value worth $733,100. The right-hander made four appearances on the mound in 2020 and struck out five batters with one save over 3.1 inning pitched in relief. Though drafted with the intent of sticking as a pitcher, he also hit .286 (4-for-14) with a double and two RBI over eight games as a shortstop. By saving big, the team will now use the extra funds towards second-round prep arm Jared Kelley.

There’s no clear indication of how much Kelley will command from the team, though it’s likely the 47th overall pick will be getting hefty sum. Following the Coffey deal and assuming first-rounder Garrett Crochet gets his full slot value of $4,547,500, the White Sox should have roughly $3,167,300 left of their $7,764,800 pool. Both fourth and fifth-rounders Kade Mechals and Bailey Horn shouldn’t take up too much, leaving Kelley with around $3,000,000 to pry him away from his University of Texas commitment.

We will have further updates on the remainder of the signings here on our website and on social media @SoxOn35th!

Sox are good and low balling talent, but not so good at spending money to get a first rate roster.
