A familiar name is returning to the South Side.
The White Sox announced on Sunday that they have signed catcher Reese McGuire to a one-year, $1.2-million deal. The 31-year-old was released by the Brewers earlier in the day after signing as a minor-league free agent on January 28.
McGuire most recently played in 45 games with the Cubs in 2025, hitting .226/.245/.444 with two doubles, nine home runs, and 24 RBI. The lefty hitter is a career .248/.293/.374 at the plate with 25 home runs and 106 RBI in 400 games over parts of eight major-league seasons with the Blue Jays (2018-21), White Sox (2022), Red Sox (2022-24), and Cubs (2025). He has also thrown out 27.1 percent (60-for-221) of attempted base stealers.
This now marks the second stint with the White Sox for McGuire, who hit .225/.261/.285 with nine doubles and 10 RBI over 53 games in 2022. He was originally acquired from Toronto on April 3 of that season and was traded to Boston a few months later in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jake Diekman.
Following today’s addition, the 40-man roster increases to 40. All eyes will be on Korey Lee as this could signal a potential move.
