The White Sox will be without last year’s All-Star for the foreseeable future.
The team announced Sunday that right-hander Shane Smith is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks due to a right rotator cuff strain, though no definitive timetable has been set for his return.
Smith, 26, struggled early in the season before being optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. Across his first three starts with the Sox, he went 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA, issuing nine walks while striking out 11 batters. The former Opening Day starter has continued to battle command issues in the minors, posting a 5.27 ERA with eight walks and six strikeouts over four starts for the Knights.
The injury adds another setback to what has been a difficult start to the year for Smith after his breakout 2025 campaign. The White Sox had hoped the right-hander could rediscover his form in Charlotte and work his way back into the major league rotation, but his recovery will now put those plans on hold as the organization continues evaluating the severity of the strain.
