Prior to today’s series opener at Seattle, the Chicago White Sox announced the following five roster moves:

  • Returned LHP Aaron Bummer from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list;
  • Reinstated 3B Yoán Moncada from the 10-day injured list;
  • Optioned OFs Adam Haseley and Mark Payton to Triple-A Charlotte;
  • Outrighted RHP Tobias Myers to Charlotte.

Bummer, who appeared in three rehab games with Charlotte, was transferred to the 60-day injured list on September 2 after originally being placed on the 15-day IL on June 12 (retroactive to June 9) with a left lat strain. The lefty was solid in his work this year, registering a 3.06 ERA (6 ER/17.2 IP, 21 strikeouts, one save, nine holds, and 3.34 FIP across 17.2 innings pitched. While he wasn’t as overpowering as he was in 2019 or 2020, he’s certainly a big boost to a thin bullpen. More innings for Bummer likely means fewer innings for Vince Velasquez, Jose Ruiz, and Joe Kelly.

Moncada, meanwhile, has struggled mightily in 2022 between his three IL stints. The 27-year-old is slashing just .197/.269/.313 (58-for-294) with seven home runs, 40 RBI, and 28 runs scored over 80 games this season. However, he’s played outstanding defense at the hot corner that has been highlighted by numerous game-saving plays. Moncada is not in the lineup for Monday’s 5:40 PM CST start in Seattle, although the lineup does feature the return of Luis Robert.

Haseley, 26, has been able to post solid numbers in Triple-A but has not yet been able to get the playing time required in his career to make his mark in the majors. A former first-round draft pick, Haseley is hitting .243/.313/.428 with the Knights. Though nothing more than a late-game defensive replacement or pinch-runner, Haseley is just 5-for-21 (.238) with two RBI in 14 games with Chicago this season.

Payton, 30, is a Chicago native and St. Rita High School alum. He’s currently slashing .289/.365/.466 (118-for-408) with 20 home runs, 77 RBI, and .887 OPS all while in Charlotte. After he was selected by the White Sox on Friday, he scored a run in his team debut the following night vs. Minnesota.

Myers, who has made five starts with the Knights, was claimed off waivers from San Francisco on August 2. After being kicked off the 40-man most recently, the 24-year-old right-hander will be staying with the organization after making it through waivers unclaimed.

Since joining Charlotte, Myers has been very disappointing in five appearances, giving up 16 runs (15 earned) on 17 hits and 11 walks over eight innings.

Following the moves, the Sox 40-man roster remains at 40
