White Sox reliever Evan Marshall to undergo Tommy John surgery

by Joe Binder

It’s been nearly two weeks since the White Sox last played and they’ve already lost an arm for the 2022 campaign.

James Fegan of The Athletic reports that reliever Evan Marshall is set to undergo Tommy John surgery sometime next month. Though this was the likely outcome since he was placed on the 60-day IL, the right-hander made every possible effort to rehab and return to the team in time for the postseason.

Prior to his injury, Marshall posted a 5.60 ERA over 27.1 IP with 26 strikeouts, 9 walks, 1.354 WHIP, and 4.63 FIP. His last appearance in a major league game came on June 29th, where he allowed two runs over two-thirds of an inning against Minnesota. We later learned that his premature exit was the result of a flexor muscle tear in his right elbow, which would prevent him from throwing for some time due to the close proximity of where the tendon attaches.

The 31-year-old ended up making five appearances for Triple-A Charlotte during his rehab assignment, striking out six over 4.1 innings. Despite some increasing velocity, Marshall experienced above average soreness following back-to-back outings. He would seek a second opinion and received a shot in his elbow to try to keep going, though didn’t end up making the ALDS roster.

While no timetable has been given for his return, he’ll most likely miss the entirety of next season. This blow could potentially result in Rick Hahn and Co. deciding non-tender him and look elsewhere for their back end solutions. Time will ultimately tell, but don’t be surprised.
