The White Sox reinstated right-handed pitcher Jonathan Cannon and left-hander Chris Murphy from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday. Both pitchers were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte as part of the move after completing their rehab assignments with the team.
Cannon, 25, opened the 2026 season in Charlotte but was recalled and made his season debut with the White Sox on April 12. That’s when he suffered his injury after he walked all three Royals batters faced without recording an out. He was placed on the injured list with right hip inflammation on April 14 (retroactive to April 13).
Once a consistent piece of the rotation, Cannon was pushed out of the starting five after the signing of left-hander Anthony Kay. Even with Kay struggling as of late, Cannon hasn’t put up much of a fight for his old role.
He began a rehab assignment with the Knights on April 28, and across his four appearances, has posted an 11.85 ERA (18 ER) over 13.2 innings. With Noah Schultz already called up and pitchers such as Hagen Smith and Tanner McDougal (once healthy) likely nearing promotions, Cannon’s way back to Chicago will likely have to be as a reliever, provided he can regain his form over the coming months.
As for Murphy, the 27-year-old was placed on the injured list on April 9 (retroactive to April 8) with left elbow impingement syndrome. Traded to the White Sox last November in exchange for catcher Ronny Hernandez, Murphy has gone 1-0 with a 10.50 ERA, one save, and six strikeouts over six relief appearances early this season. He has struggled just as much in Charlotte since the injury, posting a 9.00 ERA across 4.0 innings pitched over the span of four appearances.
