The organization’s top prospect is one step closer to the majors.
Outfielder Braden Montgomery has been promoted to Triple-A Charlotte, the White Sox announced on Sunday afternoon.
Montgomery, 23, did everything he could during the first month of Birmingham’s season to show he can help the big league club this year. Through 26 games, he slashed .316/.430/.621 with a 1.051 OPS and a 166 wRC+. Perhaps even more encouraging, Montgomery improved his walk rate by more than four percent from last season while keeping his strikeout rate steady. He’s also launched six home runs and added eight more extra-base hits, continuing to showcase the plus raw power that has made him one of baseball’s premier prospects.
With little left to prove at the Double-A level, a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte always felt inevitable. Montgomery will now join the Knights ahead of this week’s road series in Jacksonville against the Jumbo Shrimp. First pitch for Tuesday’s series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. ET/6:05 p.m. CT.
