White Sox Place Lucas Giolito, AJ Pollock on 10-Day IL

by Jordan Lazowski

While the White Sox get ready to take the field for their home opener this afternoon, the team made a few expected roster moves after some recent injuries:

  • Placed Lucas Giolito and AJ Pollock on the 10-Day IL
  • Recalled Jimmy Lambert and Anderson Severino from AAA Charlotte

Lucas Giolito sustained his abdominal strain after completing his fourth inning of work in Friday’s season opening game against the Tigers. Through four innings . Tony La Russa had previously announced that Giolito would be expected to miss two starts at least. Pollock was injured while running out a single during Game 2 of the season against the Tigers. He personally called this a more “mild” hamstring strain, and doesn’t expect to be out long. This strain coincides with the time he was expected to miss due to paternity leave, so the White Sox were not expecting his presence at this time regardless of the injury. His paternity leave will give him ample time to rest up.

Jimmy Lambert is no stranger to White Sox fans, as he has made several spot starts for the White Sox over the course of the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In his major league career, he is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings, and in his minor league career, he is 27-27 with a 4.17 ERA. He will likely fill a long relief role, but also has the ability to start games if necessary with the absences of Lance Lynn and Giolito.

Anderson Severino’s first game in this current stint will be his major league debut. The hard-throwing left-hander rose quickly through the White Sox system in just one year with the team as a high strikeout, but also high walk, pitcher. He will likely serve as depth for the team as Ethan Katz hopefully helps Severino a bit with his command issues.

You can also read our Thatcher Zalewski’s interview with Severino here! They talked about Severino’s career, his first year with the White Sox, his life outside of baseball, and more.

For now, the White Sox will continue to play “Next Man Up” with their roster as both pitchers and hitters battle early season injuries. Let’s get excited for the home opener, though, because baseball is back on the South Side!
