White Sox Option Matt Foster, Activate Vince Velasquez

by Jordan Lazowski

The White Sox made a change to their bullpen prior to their upcoming four-game series at home against the Astros.

Prior to tonight’s game, the White Sox activated Vince Velasquez and optioned Matt Foster to AAA Charlotte.

Velasquez, 30, landed on the 15-day IL with a right index finger injust on July 6. In five and two-third innings on rehab with Charlotte, he gave up three runs, striking out seven hitters and walking four. With the White Sox this season, Velasquez is 3-3 with a 5.21 ERA in 46.2 innings. He is likely to serve in a multi-inning relief role for the team moving forward.

Foster has been up-and-down with the White Sox since 2020, and in 44 innings with the club this year, he is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA. He has bounced back nicely from a disastrous 2021 campaign but hasn’t been able to re-capture the performance from his 202 season, where he was 6-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings.

At current, this would mean the White Sox are only waiting on Aaron Bummer to return from the injured list to complete their bullpen (excluding Garrett Crochet, of course), as Joe Kelly’s dizziness has not resulted in him ending up on the injured list again.
