White Sox first basemen Jose Abreu named American League Player of the Week

by Joe Binder

Jose Abreu‘s scorching hot week did not go unnoticed.

Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Pito has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period of May 24-30th. Joining him on the National League side is one of our friends to the north, Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff.

During his past seven games, Abreu went 9-for-24 with two doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBIs against the Cardinals and Orioles. If you expand that sample size a little further, you’ll see that Pito has slashed .354/.426/.671 (28-for-79) with six home runs, and 27 RBI over his last 23 games.

Abreu joins Yermin Mercedes and Carlos Rodon as the third White Sox player to be honored with the award this season, with the other two claiming theirs in April. This also marks the sixth time that the reigning MVP has earned the recognition in his career.
