White Sox designate Reese McGuire for assignment

The White Sox are making a change behind the plate.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, the team announced that catcher Reese McGuire has been designated for assignment. In a corresponding move, Drew Romo has been selected from Triple-A Charlotte to split catching duties with Edgar Quero, while Kyle Teel remains sidelined

Romo, 24, has gotten off to a strong start with the Knights. The 2020 first-rounder is hitting .298/.385/.561 with three doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI, and 11 runs scored in 17 Triple-A games this season. A switch-hitter, the January waiver claim is slashing a scorching .421/.500/.684 vs. left-handed pitchers.

In his professional career to date, Romo has appeared in just 19 major-league games with Colorado, hitting .167 (9-for-54) with six RBI. He has also thrown out 23.8% (5-for-21) of attempted basestealers.

On the other side of the transaction, the 31-year-old McGuire is hitting .172/.273/.172 (5-for-29) with no home runs and three RBIs in 11 games this season. His second stint with the team appears to be short-lived after signing a one-year, $1.2 million deal on March 22. Thanks to the 45-day advance consent clause, the White Sox avoid paying McGuire for the full value of his contract and will instead only owe him for the time he played to this point.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
