White Sox catcher Kyle Teel leaves game with non-contact leg injury

A tough season for Kyle Teel continued on Monday night in Arlington.

The White Sox catcher left the game after suffering a non-contact leg injury. The team is calling it a left ankle injury, as Teel undergoes further evaluation to determine its severity.

The injury occurred on Evan Carter’s single in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Braden Montgomery attempted to throw out Ezequiel Duran, who evaded Teel’s tag and scored on the play. Teel can be seen on replays turning his body without ever making contact with Duran, before eventually going down in pain. The backstop was helped off the field by manager Will Venable and head athletic trainer James Kruk, though he struggled to put pressure on his leg.

Teel, 24, initially missed the start of the season after suffering a right hamstring strain on March 10 while playing for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic. During his first rehab assignment, he then sustained a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee on May 16 and was transferred to the 60-day injured list three days later. He finally made his season debut on June 22, but all signs point to another IL stint looming.

With the prognosis not looking favorable, the White Sox are reportedly recalling Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte, according to MLB insider Francys Romero. Quero has continued to struggle offensively with the Knights, slashing .230/.299/.295 with a .594 OPS over 15 games. Depending on the severity of Teel’s injury, the White Sox could also explore adding another catcher ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.

This is a developing story. More to come.
