White Sox ban fan indefinitely for heckling Ketel Marte

by Joe Binder

A fan has been banned indefinitely from Rate Field after egregious comments made towards Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte on Tuesday night.

The incident, which occurred while Marte was at bat in the seventh inning, left the veteran visibly upset. The 22-year-old fan is believed to have yelled something about Marte’s late mother, Elpidia Valdez, who passed away in a car accident in 2017.

Arizona’s team personnel, including manager Torey Lovullo, heard the remarks and promptly asked for the fan’s removal. The specifics of the fan’s comments are still not exactly known, though the White Sox were quick to make sure this individual paid the price for their disgusting actions.

“It was a terrible moment,” an emotional Lovullo told reporters after the game. “Fans are nasty, and fans go too far. I love my players, and I’m going to protect them.

“I’ve known Ketel for nine years, and he’s had some unbelievably great moments and some hardships, as well. Some really, really tough moments in his life, and I know those. At the end of the day, we’re human beings and we have emotions. I saw him hurting, and I wanted to protect him.”

The Diamondbacks and White Sox will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. CT.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any further updates as they become available.
