White Sox activate Lynn; Grandal to IL amidst moves

by Joe Binder

He’s officially back.

Prior to today’s series opener in Detroit, the White Sox activated starting pitcher Lance Lynn from the 60-day IL along with the following roster moves:

  • Placed Yasmani Grandal on the 10-Day IL with lower back spasms
  • Requested waivers on Ryan Burr for the purposes of granting his unconditional release

Lynn, 35, has not pitched for the Sox at all this season. He injured his right knee in a Spring Training game, which eventually required surgery due to a slight tendon tear. In 2021, his first with the White Sox, the right-hander went 11-6 with a 2.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 176 strikeouts in 28 starts. He also signed a two-year, $38M extension during the season, with a club option for 2024.

Just recently, Lynn completed three rehab starts with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, going 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and eight strikeouts over 10.0 innings pitched. Despite being bumped up a day to make his 2022 White Sox debut, his last start in Charlotte fell last Wednesday, which means he will be on the usual five days’ rest going into today.

Burr, 28, has thrown 75.1 innings for the White Sox across four different seasons. He owns a 4-3 record with a 4.08 ERA, showing spurts of excellence without really ever being able to fully put it together. He has battled injuries throughout this season, as he landed on the Major League IL earlier this season with a right shoulder strain and is currently on the seven-day IL with the Charlotte Knights as of May 24. There is a chance that, because of his injuries this season, the White Sox are hoping to re-sign Burr to a minor league deal while he rehabs his injury.

As for Grandal, just as it looked like he was starting to turn it around this season, he finds himself heading to the injured list. Overall, the White Sox have seemed optimistic in general about his condition, and the back spasms are a completely different issue than the knee surgery he required this offseason. Hopefully, once Grandal is back in a few weeks, he is ready to pick up where it looked like he was leaving off.

With the moves this afternoon, the White Sox’s current 40-man roster remains at 40.
