With the trade deadline a week away, the White Sox have made the first of what could be many moves.
As first reported by FanSided’s Robert Murray, the team is acquiring right-handed pitcher José Urquidy from the Pirates in exchange for Dominican right-hander Felix Doroteo. James Fegan of Sox Machine also adds that Urquidy will head to Triple-A for now.
Urquidy, 31, was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday, so it’s not surprising that the return for him is rather light. Doroteo is a 21-year-old right-hander who has been pitching in the Arizona Complex League this season. In 18 innings, he has posted a 4.50 ERA, striking out 24 hitters while walking 11. Doroteo signed with the organization out of the Dominican Republic last year and stands at an impressive 6-foot-6 while featuring a fastball that gets up to 96 mph.
As for Urquidy, the 31-year-old’s career peaked in 2022 with the Astros, when he pitched 164.1 innings and posted a 3.94 ERA for the World Series Champions. He would spend the next few seasons battling injuries in the form of right shoulder discomfort and a forearm strain that led to his second career Tommy John surgery in 2024.
At his best, Urquidy has featured a five-pitch mix: fastball, sinker, changeup, sweeper, and curveball, with his sweeper being his main swing-and-miss pitch. He’s spent most of the 2026 campaign in the minors with the Pirates, tossing 83.1 innings and posting a 3.66 ERA, including a 1.74 ERA across his last six starts (31 innings).
Urquidy is far from the sort of move White Sox fans will be looking for the team to make by August 3rd, so consider this a supplementary piece for a team simply in need of options as several players approach career highs in innings pitched.
Following the move, the White Sox’ 40-man roster increases to 39.
