The White Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards from the Phillies in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Drew Thorpe has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Richards, 32, made two appearances with Philadelphia after having his contract selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on April 30. Across 4.1 innings, he allowed one run on five hits while striking out five. Richards lost his roster spot earlier today with the return of closer Jhoan Duran from the IL.
Before his brief stint, Richards put up solid numbers in Triple-A, going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts over nine appearances out of the bullpen. Opponents hit just .106 against him, going 5-for-47, as he averaged 16.71 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
Over his nine-year major league career to date, Richards owns a 4.52 ERA across 297 appearances, 61 of which have been starts. He has pitched in parts of nine MLB seasons with the Marlins (2018-19), Rays (2019-21), Brewers (2021), Blue Jays (2021-24), Twins (2024), Royals (2025), Diamondbacks (2025), and Phillies (2026). Expected to serve out of the bullpen, the White Sox will mark his ninth team.
As for Thorpe, he was placed on the 15-day injured list on March 25 to continue his recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in March 2025.
The White Sox say a corresponding roster move will be made before Richards’ addition to the 26-man roster. The 40-man roster is currently at capacity.
