White Sox 7, Angels 3: Offense surges past Halos

by Dwayne Banks Jr

After a night to remember with Liam Hendriks returning to the mound, the White Sox continued their three-game series against the Angels, where the bats surged thanks in part to Romy González and Andrew Vaughn.

Lucas Giolito took the mound for the White Sox today but gave up a solo line drive to Taylor Ward in the top of the first inning, putting the Angels on top 1-0. Lucas settled in throughout the remainder of the game until the fourth, where Shohei Ohtani belted a solo homer to center field, putting the Angels ahead 2-1. The Angels would continue to add on to the lead, as Jared Walsh singled on a line drive and Gio Urshela hit an RBI sac fly, scoring Hunter Renfroe, thus making the score 3-1. Giolito would continue to pitch until he was replaced with Reynaldo Lopez at the top of the 6th inning. From there on, the bullpen slammed the door on the Angels’ chances to score, limiting the Angels’ offense to a double by Taylor Ward in the top of the eighth.

The offense came alive in the first as Jake Burger singled on a line drive to right, Luis Robert Jr. doubled to left, and Eloy Jimenez popped up for an RBI sacrifice fly to Hunter Renfroe, scoring the tying run at the time. The offense remained cold until the fourth inning, when a Robert Jr. double, Jimenez single, and Moncada walk loaded the bases, which Andrew Vaughn promptly unloaded to give the White Sox their first lead of the day. Romy González also contributed to the comeback effort, as he knocked in another run via an RBI double, giving the Sox a 5-3 lead. He would then contribute on the basepath, stealing third base on an error by Gio Urshela, increasing the lead to 6-3. González’s night was not over, as he belted a moonshot to left-center in the sixth, giving the Sox the largest lead of the evening at 7-3.

With this victory, the White Sox improved to 23-34 and could – potentially – take the series against the Angels.

W: Lucas Giolito (4-4) | L: Tyler Anderson (2-1)

Notable Performances

Lucas Giolito: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

It was an up-and-down outing for Giolito, and he got himself in more trouble than he needed to. Overall, however, he more than kept the White Sox in this game.

A key piece to today’s offense, González continues to put up good at-bats for the Sox.
