White Sox 6, Diamondbacks 0: Shutout win breaks losing streak

Noah Schultz was perfect today — literally. The lanky left-hander spun 2.1 perfect innings in the White Sox’ 6-0 win over the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Schultz was one of four Sox pitchers who combined to blank the Snakes. Anthony Kay and Tanner McDougal each struck out a pair over three scoreless innings, while Brandon Eisert got the final two outs.

All four hurlers have turned in impressive Springs to this point.

Kay earned his second win in the contest and now owns a 2.35 ERA through 7.2 innings. Today, he topped out at 97 on the gun and generated eight swings-and-misses.

McDougal continued his push to make the team, lowering his Spring ERA to 2.25 while his fastball touched 100.4. He allowed just a pair of hits in his three innings of work, and has yet to issue a free pass in 8.0 innings.

Eisert made his fourth appearance and has allowed just one baserunner to this point. He recorded another strikeout in the win, his seventh in just 3.2 innings.

The staff received more than enough offensive support from Oliver Dunn and Jarred Kelenic, who drove in all six runs with a pair of three-run homers.

The Sox had just four other hits, two of which came off the bat of George Wolkow. The team’s No. 14 prospect rocketed a ball to right field at 120.7 MPH in the top of the ninth.

Key Performers

Tanner McDougal (RP): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

McDougal dazzled in his first appearance since February 27. The White Sox No. 6 prospect fired three scoreless innings while averaging 98.7 MPH on his four-seamer.

Noah Schultz (RP): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

The southpaw Schultz fared much better in his second outing of the Spring, keeping the Diamondbacks off-balance with his five-pitch arsenal. He made heavy use of his slider, which accounted for seven of his 25 pitches.

Jarred Kelenic (RF-CF): 1-for-3, HR, R, 3 RBI

Kelenic stood out with one swing today: his three-run homer in the 4th put the Sox ahead 6-0. The 419-foot blast to right was the former-top prospect’s first bomb of the Spring.

Updates

Following the win, the Sox announced their first cuts of the Spring. The team optioned right-hander Duncan Davitt to Charlotte and reassigned the following players to Minor League camp:

The Sox still have 57 players in major-league camp.

According to 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine, manager Will Venable said that the team is close to announcing an Opening Day starter.

Venable also said that Luisangel Acuña will continue to play multiple positions, per Levine. Acuña has appeared at both center and shortstop for the Sox this Spring. Venable apparently made no comments about Acuña’s value as a switch-hitter.

Next Game

The Sox take on the Mariners tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:10 Central time, with Grant Taylor and Logan Gilbert penciled in as starters.
