by Sox On 35th Contributors

The White Sox won their first game of 2022 in Detroit today by the final score of 5-2. Dylan Cease took the ball for the Sox and he was stellar. AJ Pollock suffered a injury early in this one but the Sox bats came through big in the win.

Cease went 5 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 run while recording 8 strikeouts. He looked really sharp in his first start of the year. With Giolito going on the IL, Dylan will need to be big for the Sox in the first couple weeks of the season. Reynaldo Lopez came in the game in relief, throwing 1 inning and allowing 1 run. Bennett Sousa for the second straight day came on in relief, and threw the ball very well. Sousa threw 1.1 scoreless innings, with 1 strikeout. Jose Ruiz also came on and worked 0.2 scoreless innings. Aaron Bummer came on for the save after Liam Hendriks threw over 30 pitches on Opening Day. He found himself in a bit of trouble in the 9th with back-to-back singles to Miguel Cabrera and Jonathan Schoop. Bummer went on to strike out the side, striking out Eric Haase, Spencer Torkelson, and pinch hitter Dustin Garneau.

The scoring started early for the White Sox today against Tigers starter Casey Mize. Eloy singled to center with two outs in the first, scoring Luis Robert and Jose Abreu. Then, in the top of the 6th, Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run homer, giving the Sox some insurance runs going into the later innings. In the top of the 7th, Andrew Vaughn singled in a run after coming into the game for Pollock, scoring Josh Harrison. Before going down with a injury, AJ Pollock was 1 for 2, while Luis Robert and Jose Abreu had a nice days at the plate, both going 2-for-4. Josh Harrison also went 2-for-4 on the day with a lead off triple in the top of the 5th.

The Sox improve to 1-1 after getting their first win of the season. They’ll go for the series win tomorrow, and Micheal Kopech will make his first start of the season tomorrow!

Notable Performances

Dylan Cease: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K

The potential CY Young candidate Dylan Cease was looking like one today. His stuff was on today in Detroit, as he threw 5 innings of 1 run baseball with 8 strikeouts to go along with the effort. Cease will have to be a big part of the rotation since Giolito hit the IL, so the Sox will need this Dylan Cease day in and day out for the next couple of starts.

Bennett Sousa: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 SO

Bennett Sousa has been great for the Sox out the pen. Making the Opening Day roster out of Spring Training, he has been stellar in his first 2 appearances. In his MLB debut yesterday in the loss, he tossed a scoreless inning yesterday, and threw another today while recording his 1st career MLB strikeout.

Aaron Bummer: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 SO

Aaron Bummer found himself in a bit of a jam in the ninth, as when he came in, he gave up back-to-back singles to start the frame. However, he managed to wiggle his way out of it, striking out the side in the 9th and holding on for a Sox win!

Yasmani Grandal: 4 AB, 1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI

YAZ BAT DROPS ARE BACK! Yasmani Grandal hit a huge homer in the 6th, giving the Sox some insurance. This was the Yaz that we saw finishing off the season last year when we was on fire after coming back from his injury.

Eloy Jimenez: 4 AB, 1 H, 2 RBI

Eloy Jimenez jump started the boys early in Detroit with a 2-run base hit up the middle off of Casey Mize. Coming off a short season last year, the Sox have a healthy Eloy, and that is a scary sight. Jimenez will be a big bat in the middle of the lineup and the sky is the limit for what he can accomplish.

Josh Harrison: 4 AB, 2 H, 1 R

Near the end off the off-season, Rich Hahn went out and signed second baseman Josh Harrison. Today, he picked up his first hit as a White Sox: a triple to right center field to lead off the 5th. He will be a great piece for the Sox – he plays fast, he plays with energy, he has a great glove, and he will be a great fit here on the Southside!

The Next Matchup

The rubber match between the White Sox and Tigers on Opening Weekend will conclude tomorrow afternoon! Michael Kopech will take the hill for the White Sox, going up against Tarik Skubal of the Tigers.

The game will start at 12:10 PM over on NBC Sports Chicago once again.
