White Sox 5, Tigers 1: Vaughn Delivers in Detroit

by Brian Barry

Andrew Vaughn was the catalyst in Chicago’s 5-1 Tuesday night triumph, delivering four hits and an RBI in the outstanding effort. The Sox offense piled on 12 hits and the staff held Detroit to no extra-base hits in the divisional clash.

Detroit got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but that was the only lead they would hold and the only run they would score in the evening. Dylan Cease needed a hefty 108 pitches (71 strikes) to get through five frames, but battled hard and relied on his sharp off-speed pitches to keep the Tigers at bay. He struck out eight, scattering seven hits, a walk, and an unearned run along the way to securing his fifth victory of the season.

Vaughn’s RBI single in the second inning tied the game at 1-1, and the Sox wouldn’t look back after that. Luis Robert provided two RBI singles, one in the second and one in the sixth, to push his season average to .284 and his hitting streak to six games. Yoán Moncada‘s RBI double and Leury Garcia‘s sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth added a bit of breathing room and pushed it to a 4-1 lead. The bullpen consisting of Jimmy Lambert, Reynaldo Lopez, and the newly activated Joe Kelly combined to blank Detroit over four frames to close out the game.

The White Sox move to 29-31 with the win tonight and remain in third place in the American League Central.

W: Dylan Cease (5-3, 2.91 ERA) | L: Drew Hutchison (0-4, 4.58 ERA)

Notable Performances

Andrew Vaughn: 4-for-4, BB, R, RBI (29)

Vaughn raised his season average to .308 as he continues to showcase his exceptional hitting abilities and prove that he belongs near the top of the lineup.

Dylan Cease: 5.0 IP, 8 Ks, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 R (0 ER)

Although his early fastball command was shaky, Dylan was able to escape a few jams and hold Detroit to the lone unearned run. His nasty stuff was once again on display, as he struck out eight, generated 15 swings and misses, and lowered his season ERA to 2.91 in the process. Efficiency remains the only question mark in what has otherwise been an outstanding season to date for Cease.

AJ Pollock, Luis Robert, Yoán Moncada: combined 5-for-12, 1 BB, 2 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI

Today’s 1-3-5 spots in the lineup stepped up and provided in several key scenarios. AJ Pollock has been red-hot at the dish in June and is demonstrating how important his bat is to this team. He had the two hardest hit balls in tonight’s game as he continues to put his early season struggles in the rearview mirror.
