White Sox 5, Cubs 4: Late Game Heroics Lead To Victory

by Thatcher Zalewski

The White Sox offense was silent through eight innings in today’s game against the Cubs, and it looked like it was going to be a brutal 1-0 loss for the club. However, the White Sox proceeded to score five runs in between the ninth-twelfth innings on their way to a crazy victory. This game was filled with emotion, as most fans probably thought this game was over after the Cubs scored two in the tenth. Ultimately the White Sox didn’t quit, which led them to a comeback extra-inning victory.

However, the top headline in today’s game was that star shortstop Tim Anderson left today’s game with a strained right groin. Hopefully, the issue isn’t any worse as Anderson will undergo further evaluation on tomorrow’s off day. This is a huge loss for the offense because Anderson has been one of the few guys holding their weight. If out for an extended period of time, the team will, without a doubt, feel the loss of arguably the best shortstop in baseball this year.

The team didn’t do much of anything offensively until late in the game. RBI’s from Jose Abreu, Andrew Vaughn, Adam Engel, and the game’s hero Jake Burger picked things up for the team when they needed it the most. This was a much-needed victory heading into two tough matchups this coming week.

Dylan Cease went seven solid innings for the White Sox. He ended up striking out five and walking three, only allowing one unearned run on two hits. In the end, it was a good day for Dylan. The White Sox also threw Kendall Graveman and Liam Hendriks, who combined for two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Matt Foster provided a shut-out twelfth, allowing the White Sox to take charge and get the victory. Aaron Bummer and Reynaldo Lopez also threw today with mixed results.

With this win the White Sox move to 23-23 on the season, which will put them 5 games back of the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central.

W: Matt Foster (1-0) | L: Robert Gsellman (0-2)

Notable Performances

Dylan Cease: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Cease was on his game today as he shut down the Cubs through seven innings. He didn’t have his usual strike out numbers but he was still very good. The thing that hurt Cease the most was the walks, but it didn’t matter because the White Sox still got the victory. Dylan Cease is continuing to have a breakout season and was able to bounce back really well after a rough outing against the Red Sox.

Jake Burger: 1-for-5, 1 RBI

Jake Burger was the hero in today’s game! He hit the walk off single which led the White Sox to victory while securing the seasons series over the Cubs. Outside of his heroics in the twelfth, there wasn’t much else that he did to contribute to the win. However, he gets included by being the final hero today.
