White Sox 5, Cubs 1: Solo Homers Feul Win

by Brett Haffner
5 minutes read

There’s just something special about the 2026 Spring Training White Sox playing at Sloan Park.

In two Spring Training games against the Cubs, the White Sox have outscored the Cubs 13-2. No matter when it is, no matter the time of year, it always feels good to beat the Northsiders.

Edgar Quero set the tone, continuing his red hot Spring and launching the first of four solo homers by the White Sox in this ballgame.

Braden Montgomery, Austin Hays, and Lenyn Sosa would all join the solo home run party, each contributing quite well to the offensive mashing of the Cubs.

While facing the majority of his former team’s starting lineup, Anthony Kay had another solid start, going 2.2 innings of one-run ball. The only major damage came from Alex Bregman‘s solo homer in the 1st inning.

In a relatively quiet last few innings, the White Sox bullpen took care of business, shutting down the Cubs’ lineup to help the White Sox bring home their seventh win of Spring Training. Their record currently stands at 7-4 through ten contests.

Key Performers

Edgar Quero

  • 2-4, HR, RBI, K

Another game, another RBI for Edgar Quero in the Cactus League– this time coming from a solo home run in the 1st inning.

What’s notable here: Quero hit only one home run as a right-handed batter last year, so it’s encouraging to see him tap into that power from the right side.

He’s certainly making a strong case to be getting everyday run in the lineup, even when Kyle Teel has been more often discussed as the Southsiders’ starting catcher. This time of Spring Training when Teel is playing in the World Baseball Classic for Team Italy is really letting Quero shine in the best way.

Braden Montgomery

  • 2-3, 3B, HR, RBI

With both Montgomery’s in the lineup today, it was Braden’s turn to shine, with two very impressive extra base hits to show.

His second inning home run was crushed, registering an exit velocity of 107.7 MPH from the right side. Then in the fifth, hitting lefty, he sliced a triple to right field, utilizing both sides of the plate quite well.

Lenyn Sosa

  • 2-3, 2B, HR, RBI, BB

Sosa registered another strong game, continuing off of his vastly improved 2025 season. The broadcast missed his 3rd inning home run, but he proceeded to crush a double off the wall in next his plate appearance.

With how aggressive Sosa likes being at the plate, it’s always encouraging to see him work a count into a walk, showing some good discipline in his later at-bats.

The Bullpen

  • 6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Anthony Kay had a fine outing, only allowing one run in 2.2 innings of work, but the next eight White Sox pitchers shut the Cubs down, allowing very few baserunners in the final 6.1 innings.

Next Game

The White Sox will be heading back to Camelback Ranch as they host the San Francisco Giants. First pitch is set for Monday at 2:05 CST.
