White Sox 3, Yankees 1: Pollock’s Homers Lifts Sox to Win

Sox beat the Yankees, 3-1 and A.J. Pollock homers late in this one giving the Sox the lead in the 9th. Johnny Cueto was stellar for the second straight start, throwing 6 innings of shut out baseball. In Kansas City, he went 6 innings scoreless, with 7 K’s. In this one in the Bronx, he held the Yankees scoreless through 6. The Sox gave up the lead late in the 8th, due to a Aaron Judge homer. But, A.J. Pollock and Adam Engel both have RBIs in the 9th. All that and more in the recap!

Sox bats woke up late in this one as they score 3 runs to beat the Yankees. 1 run in the fourth, and 2 in the ninth to push past the Yanks. Yasmani Grandal opened the scoring with a RBI single in the 4th. Yaz singled home Jose Abreu to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Then, a homer by Aaron Judge to tie the game at 1-1 in the 8th. A.J. Pollock led off the 9th inning with a home run off Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman. Then Andrew Vaughn walked, and Engel doubled home Vaughn to give the Sox a 3-1 lead.

The pitching today was stellar. An absolute masterclass from Johnny Cueto. He held the Yankees scoreless through 6 innings. Cueto ran into some trouble in the 7th when the first two hitters singled, and that was the end of the road for him. He left with 6 innings, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Joe Kelly entered in relief in the bottom of the 7th, with 2 runners on. Kelly stuck out Marwin Gonzalez, and then picked of runner Aaron Hicks who was dancing off of second, and then punched out Jose Trevino with a 99 mph sinker right town the middle to end the threat in the 7th. Kendall Graveman come on in the 8th and gave up a solo shot to Aaron Judge to tie the game. Then after the 2 run top of the ninth, Liam Hendriks slammed the door for his 13th save of the year to give the Sox the win in the Bronx. The dominant starting pitching and some 9th inning heroics put the Sox back at .500 and move to 20-20.

He now has 12 strikeouts this season. So far though two starts, he has looked like a diamond in the rough for the Sox.

Joe Kelly came on in the 7th and got the Sox out of jam, and had 2 huge strikeouts that proved big in this one. He also picked off Yankee runner Aaron Hicks for a little bit of breathing room.

A.J. Pollock: 2-for-4, HR, RBI

Pollock hit the go ahead homer off of Aroldis Chapman in the 9th to give the Sox a 2-1 lead.

Adam Engel: 2-for-4, RBI

Adam Engel doubled home Andrew Vaughn in the 9th for a huge insurance run.
