White Sox 3, Royals 2: Sox Split Doubleheader

by Sox On 35th Contributors

Game 1: Royals 4, White Sox 2

The White Sox fell in game one of the doubleheader in KC 4-2. Lance Lynn was burned by four earned runs, all of which came on home runs – a pair of two-run shots. Outside of Lynn’s six innings, Joe Kelly and Matt Foster both worked two scoreless innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Royals starter Brady Singer had no problem with the White Sox in this one. Josh Harrison provided an early spark with a solo homer in the third inning. After that, Singer was cruising along – he worked deep into the ballgame, exiting in the eighth inning and giving up just one run. The Sox tried to rally late once again in this one, but once again fell short. The Sox were in business in the ninth inning after Jose Abreu led off the inning with a base hit and Andrew Vaughn followed with a double. Yoan Moncada drove in the second and final run of the day in the ninth on a sac-fly, and the rest of the rally was squashed shortly after.

W: Brady Singer (5-4) | (L): Lance Lynn (2-5) | S: Jose Cuas (1)

Game 2: White Sox 3, Royals 2

The bats came through to power the Sox to victory in game two of the twin bill in Kansas City. Davis Martin worked another solid outing, and three runs were all it took for the Sox to secure the win.

Martin worked five and two-thirds innings and this one, once again giving the Sox a chance to win. Jake Diekman continued to be outstanding. He came on after Davis Martin and recorded one strikeout for the last out in the sixth inning. Reynaldo Lopez made his return from the IL with one inning of scoreless baseball. Kendall Graveman worked a clean eighth inning, and Liam Hendriks came on to shut the door. He did give up one run after a single and a couple wild pitches, making the third run in this one all the more important.

Just like in the first game, the offense was sparked with another third-inning homer, this one off the bat of Lenyn Sosa – the first homer of his big league career. Yoan Moncada also left the ballpark in the sixth, adding to the lead with his sixth homer of the year. Then in the eighth inning, Gavin Sheets provided some much-needed insurance with a double to drive in Luis Robert.

With the split, the White Sox are now 56-54 on the season with 52 games left to play.

W: Davis Martin (2-3) | L: Jonathan Heasley (1-7) | S: Liam Hendriks (23)

White Sox Scoring Recap:

Top 3rd: Lenyn Sosa homers to left. 1-0 Sox
Top 6th: Yoan Moncada homers to right. 2-0 Sox
Top 8th: Gavin Sheets doubles to left, scoring Luis Robert. 3-1 Sox

Notable Performances

Lenyn Sosa: 2-for-4, HR, 1 RBI

This big swing from Sosa gave the White Sox the 1-0 lead and gave Sosa the first homer of his career. With Tim Anderson hurt, Sosa will likely get a chance to prove he belongs at this level.

Yoan Moncada: 1-for-4, HR

Moncada had a couple of balls fall at the track today in a long day of baseball. Then in the sixth, he drilled one to make it 2-0.

Eloy Jimenez: 3-for-3, BB

Aside from Eloy’s three hits today, his walk proved to be the biggest. The walk came around to score the winning run as Luis Robert came in to pinch-run and scored on a double by Gavin Sheets.

Davis Martin: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Once again another quality start from Davis Martin. Coming up from the minors, he has turned into a serviceable major league arm. He got the job done tonight.
