Tony La Russa to Miss Tonight’s Game for Medical Reasons

by Jordan Lazowski

Shortly before tonight’s White Sox game, the club announced that Tony La Russa will miss tonight’s game against the Kansas City Royals at the direction of his doctor. La Russa is scheduled to undergo further testing tomorrow in Chicago.

Bench coach Miguel Cairo will manage the club in La Russa’s absence. Cairo, 48, went 2-0 as the White Sox acting manager in 2021, recording a 9-8 victory on August 12 vs. the Yankees at the Field of Dreams Game and a 7-2 win on September 17 at Texas.

La Russa, 77, has been under fire from White Sox fans for the majority of his tenure with the team. Since returning to the White Sox, the club has finished 93-69 in 2021 and has started the 2022 season at 63-65. The club has performed well below expectations in both the 2021 playoffs and 2022 regular season, leading many fans to call for La Russa to be fired.

La Russa is in the second year of a three-year contract with the team, and by all accounts, the team is expecting him to return next season if the club makes the playoffs. However, it has previously been reported that La Russa could be “reassigned” within the organization should the club miss the playoffs.

The White Sox anticipate that they will provide an update on La Russa prior to tomorrow night’s game. We will keep you updated on the situation as more information becomes available, and we wish the best of health to the team’s skipper.
