Tale of the Tape: Royals 6, White Sox 3

by Jordan Lazowski

The Royals outhomered the White Sox again yesterday, hitting two timely blasts off of Lucas Giolito in the first and sixth innings. It felt like the Sox had runners on base all day, but they failed to execute, scoring only three runs and dropping the series finale.

Though he did give up five runs, Giolito set a new club record with eight consecutive strikeouts. Here’s all eight of them.

Stats On 35th: Let’s Break this one down By the Numbers

Yesterday’s Numbers:

16.1/-31.6, 10, .480, 6, 7

16.1/-31.6

Yesterday’s MVP and LVP, in terms of Win Probability Added (WPA) were Yoan Moncada (16.1%) and Lucas Giolito (-31.6%). Yoan Moncada had a great day at the plate, while Lucas Giolito gave up some untimely home runs en route to the loss yesterday

With his streak of strikeouts yesterday, Lucas Giolito became just the tenth major league pitcher to ever record eight or more strikeouts in a row. He fell two short of Tom Seaver’s 1970 record of 10 in a row. Though Lucas did give up the big flies yesterday, he looked to be on cruise control for the majority of the afternoon.

.480

Yoan Moncada quietly had an incredible homestand, going 12-for-25 (.480) over the course of the six ballgames. He has brought his average right back to around .300 for the season as well as he continues to spray hits all across the ballpark.

6

With his 12-strikeout performance, Lucas Giolito captured his sixth 10+ strikeout performance of the season. He now has over 220 strikeouts on the season, helping to give the White Sox the most 10+ strikeouts performances by a SP in the majors this season.

7

With the loss, the White Sox fell to 64-82 on the season, ensuring what we all knew for months: this is the 7th consecutive season the White Sox will finish under .500. Better times are on the horizon, so hopefully this is the last time we talk about this for a very long time.
