Simulated Sox: White Sox vs. Twins, September 5th

by Joe Binder

In case you may have missed it, we’ve jumped ahead in our simulation due to the looming return of actual baseball. The fast-forward now brings us to September 5th, a crucial point in the season as the Sox find themselves in a pivotal series against the Minnesota Twins.

After jumping out to a quick lead, the Sox hung on thanks to some clutch pitching and a few extra insurance runs to win their second-straight against the Twins, 5-3.

Yasmani Grandal, penciled in at the two-spot, got things started by smoking one off Minnesota’s third baseman Miguel Sano for a single. Yoan Moncada then poked one to the same side of the field for a single to bring up Eloy Jimenez. The left fielder would take care of the rest, destructing a baseball 415 feet to dead center for a 3-0 lead.

Josh Donaldson would soon respond for the Twins. In the bottom of the second, the “Bringer of Rain” made it pour with a two-run bomb to cut the deficit down to one. This wasn’t the only time Sox starter Lucas Giolito got into some trouble. He kept putting the lead-off man on in each inning, escaping a two on and nobody out situation in the fourth. When facing more trouble in the fifth, Ricky had opted to bring Jace Fry in from the ‘pen, who wound up bailing out the ace.

The South Siders would tack on two more runs in the top of the fifth, which turned out to be the difference. Michael Kopech was solid in relief, striking out the first six batters he faced. Aaron Bummer followed by punching tickets for all three of his opponents, then got an out in the ninth before Steve Cishek brought it home.

FINAL: White Sox 5, Twins 3
