Simulated Sox: Royals vs. White Sox, April 22nd

by Sox On 35th Staff

Get your brooms out! The Sox finally captured their first sweep of 2020 and in impressive fashion, too. Yesterday, you all remember how the club outscored the Royals by 14 runs, right? Well today, it was just one run less as the offense had another outburst at the plate in a 13-0 shutout.

This might actually come as a shock but the story of the game wasn’t about the offense. It was about starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez, who went the distance for a shutout. ReyLo was locked in all afternoon with great command and offspeed working in his favor. He kept his pitch count reasonable and only fell behind a handful of times, two of which resulted in walks. Overall, he finished the game off with a line of nine innings pitched, four hits given up, two walks, five strikeouts, and a giant goose egg in the runs column. This outing was reminiscent of his complete game in Cleveland last September, with just a slight dip in strikeouts as he pitched more to contact today.

At the dish, Tim Anderson led the bottom of the first off with a homer to left as things spiraled out of control quite quickly thereafter for Kansas City. It was just hit after hit – Leury Garcia double, Jose Abreu single, Yoan Moncada single, Edwin Encarnacion single, etc. You get the picture. The White Sox scored a combined eight runs in the first three innings alone so talk about setting the tone early!

After the giving the Royals some time to catch their breath, a late home run derby proceeded to break out in the seventh and eight innings. Catcher Yasmani Grandal hit two moonshots in each inning that combined for 867 feet! YoYo also crushed one 403 feet in the eighth to help in adding an extra five runs onto the already insurmountable lead, making it a crispy 13-0 before all was said and done.

Even though it’s a virtual sweep, it still feels good. Cue the video!

FINAL: White Sox 13, Royals 0
