Results from Saturday’s White Sox Intrasquad Scrimmage

by Joe Binder

There was a little rain early on but that was no problem for the Sox. The team managed to hold their third intrasquad scrimmage when the skies cleared, which featured a very strange home run from Luis Robert.

Here’s a game log put together based on tweets by the media members in attendance.

Top of the 1st

Pitcher: Reynaldo Lopez

  • Nick Madrigal (1): Flies out on the first pitch to left fielder Eloy Jimenez.
  • Andrew Vaughn (2): Grounds out to shortstop Tim Anderson, who ranged towards third base to make a solid play.
  • Zack Collins (3): Strikes out.
  • James McCann (4): Grounds out to third baseman Danny Mendick.

1-2-3-4 opening frame. No score.

Bottom of the 1st

Pitcher: Carlos Rodon

  • Tim Anderson (1): Grounds out to second baseman Nick Madrigal, who took away a hit up the middle.
  • Luis Robert (2): Flies out to right fielder Luis Basabe.
  • Jose Abreu (3): Also flies out to right fielder Luis Basabe.
  • Edwin Encarnacion (4): Pops out to first baseman Andrew Vaughn
  • Yasmani Grandal (5): Flies out to left fielder Yermin Mercedes.

1-2-3-4-5 bottom half. No score.

Top of the 2nd

Pitcher: Reynaldo Lopez

  • Cheslor Cuthbert (5): Out, unknown.
  • Yermin Mercedes (6): Doubles down the third base line.
  • Adam Engel (7): Homers (a bomb) to left field for the 2-0 lead.
  • Luis Basabe (8): N/A
  • Andrew Romine (9): N/A

Away team leads 2-0.

Bottom of the 2nd

  • Eloy Jimenez (6): Grounds out to shortstop/third base side.
  • Nomar Mazara (7): Singles to right-center field for the home team’s first hit.
  • Danny Mendick (8): Walks. Runners on first and second.
  • Leury Garcia (9): Strikes out swinging.

Away team leads 2-0.

Top of the 3rd

Pitcher: Reynaldo Lopez

  • Nick Madrigal (1): Lines out to left field.
  • Andrew Vaughn (2): Grounds out to third baseman Danny Mendick.
  • Zack Collins (3): Homers to left field to make it 3-0, away team.
  • James McCann (4): Singles to center field on a ball that was almost caught by a diving Luis Robert.
  • Cheslor Cuthbert (5): Flies out to left-center as Robert runs it down.

Away team leads 3-0.

Bottom of the 3rd

Pitcher: Carlos Rodon

  • Tim Anderson (1): Out, unknown.
  • Luis Robert (2): Homers to left-center and falls down in the process. The reaction from Carlos Rodon says it all. Home team trails 3-1.
  • Jose Abreu (3): Reaches base, unknown.
  • Edwin Encarnacion (4): Singles off the glove of Rodon.

Away team leads 3-1.

Top of the 4th

Pitcher: Dylan Cease replaces Rodon.

  • Yermin Mercedes (6): Singles on a line drive to left field.
  • Adam Engel (7): Bunt singles. Runners on first and second.
  • Luis Basabe (8): N/A
  • Andrew Romine (9): N/A
  • Nick Madrigal (1): Nick Madrigal reaches on a Tim Anderson throwing error that skips past Jose Abreu. The first baseman’s throw to second then bounced into left, allowing for Madrigal to advance to third. Ugly.

There were no additional updates from this inning so I’m not sure if it continued or ended here. The score also became lost at this point.

Bottom of the 4th

Pitcher: Jimmy Lambert replaces Lopez

  • Yasmani Grandal (5): Strikes out looking.
  • Eloy Jimenez (6): Strikes out swinging.
  • Nomar Mazara (7): Homers to Goose Island in right field.
  • Danny Mendick (8): N/A
  • Leury Garcia (9): N/A
  • Tim Anderson (1): N/A
  • Luis Robert (2): Strikes out looking.

Score unknown.

Top of the 5th

Pitcher: Dylan Cease

  • Andrew Vaughn (2) – Cheslor Cuthbert (5): N/A
  • Yermin Mercedes (6): Strikes out
  • Adam Engel (7): Strikes out

At some point after the Dylan Cease strikeouts were reported by MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, the game ended. It doesn’t appear that anyone had tabs on the final score, not that it matters at the end of the day.

The team will reportedly be playing a six-inning intrasquad game tomorrow with Monday’s falling between 6-7 innings. Wednesday will then be the squad’s first night game.

All of the scrimmages from Monday through Thursday will be available on NBC Sports Chicago’s My Teams app, with a select couple also being televised. Jason Benetti and Chuck Garfien appear to have the call.
