The White Sox appear to be adding some much-welcomed pitching depth.
According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, the team is “closing in on a contract” with free-agent pitcher Adrian Houser. This news comes just a few days after FutureSox’s James Fox reported the club was interested in the righty.
Houser, 32, was recently granted his release from a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers. The former Met signed the deal this offseason and worked primarily out of the starting rotation with the team’s Triple-A affiliate. In Round Rock, he posted a 5.03 ERA in nine games (eight starts) during the first month and a half. Though the numbers may look a little rough on the surface, Houser provides hope for better results thanks to a 22.8% strikeout rate and 57.3% ground-ball rate.
Once a deal is made official, it’s unclear where Houser might end up. It’s certainly possible that if the White Sox don’t assign him to Triple-A Charlotte, he could slide into the major league rotation. Otherwise, he gives Will Venable a solid option out of the bullpen to eat multiple innings when called upon.
