After taking two of three from the Blue Jays this week, the White Sox gave us a nail biter tonight, outlasting some extra inning hijinks in tonight’s 5-4 victory.
Lucas Giolito had another solid outing, giving up just two runs across six innings. He was followed by Garrett Crochet, who followed with two scoreless innings of his own before a downpour stopped Liam Hendriks mid-outing in the ninth.
Hendriks would return after the rain delay and give up the game-tying homer to Daz Cameron before Aaron Bummer closed things down in the tenth inning for the White Sox’ second extra-inning win of the year.
On offense, Adam Engel (HR) and Danny Mendick (1B) provided the runs early, while Yoan Moncada provided the go-ahead RBI sac fly that would serve as the difference-maker in tonight’s victory.
With the win, the White Sox improve to 39-24 on the season.
W: Liam Hendriks (3-1) | L: Jose Cisnero (0-4) | S: Aaron Bummer (2)
Lucas Giolito: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 19 Swinging Strikes
Giolito had another quality outing this evening, striking out nine hitters across six innings of work. He did give up two solo home runs to Nomar Mazara and Isaac Paredes, but other than that, it was another solid outing for the young right-hander.
Adam Engel: 2-for-4, HR, RBI
Adam Engel continues to provide some quick offense on his return from the injured list, homering for the second times in as many days. With some heavy injuries for the White Sox this season, they’re going to need Adam Engel to return to his 2020 form in order to help give the offense some continued life.
Danny Mendick: 2-for-4, RBI, 2 K
Danny Mendick stands to benefit from Nick Madrigal’s injury, and in the early-going, he’s made the most of his opportunity. His RBI single in the fifth inning extended the White Sox’ lead to two runs at the time, and he also scored the go-ahead run on Moncada’s RBI sac fly in the tenth inning.
He also added a huge offensive play to end the game on a hard-hit ball back up the middle from Jonathan Schoop.
Garrett Crochet: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Garrett Crochet, according to Tony La Russa, is going to start getting at least two innings in his outings, and this started with a bang tonight. Crochet threw all three of his pitches – fastball, changeup, slider – for strikes and completed his 13th straight scoreless outing on the season (15 IP). He lowered his season ERA to 0.44 in the process.
Other Notable Performances: Jose Abreu (2-for-5, R), Zack Collins (1-for-3, 2B, BB)
Moment of the Game
After surrendering the lead in the bottom of the ninth, you could feel the momentum start to shift towards Detroit. The White Sox and Yoan Moncada ended that quickly by scratching a run across in the top of the tenth off the RBI sac fly by Yoan Moncada and a nifty slide by Danny Mendick.
The White Sox and Tigers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, as Dylan Cease will make his second consecutive start against the team from Mo-Town. The game will get started at 3:10 PM CT and can be viewed, as always, on NBC Sports Chicago.
