Postgame Report: White Sox 15, Tigers 2

by Jordan Lazowski

Well, if anyone wondered how the White Sox were going to respond to another long-term loss of a starter on offense, the White Sox decided to take care of business and then some this afternoon against the Tigers. Dylan Cease was sharp in five innings, but was simply an afterthought as the White Sox put up 15 runs on 13 hits. It was the Brian Goodwin game, as he made his first start with the White Sox and promptly drove in five runs in the effort. Adam Eaton and Jake Lamb were the only starters to not record a hit, but both did reach base twice via a walk.

Ryan Burr and Matt Foster both took two innings in relief of Dylan Cease, and with the win, the White Sox improved to 40-24 on the season.

Take a look below for a recap of all the exciting scoring this afternoon!

W: Dylan Cease (5-2) | L: Jose Urena (2-6)

Notable Performances

Dylan Cease: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 15 Swinging Strikes

Cease’s performance was cut short by the amount of scoring in today’s game, as he exited with only 82 pitches thrown. However, he was sharp while he was in, allowing just a two-run homer in the first inning to Harold Castro on a pitch that probably shouldn’t have been hit out. Cease really had his slider and curveball working today, and that was reflected in the pitch breakdown today.

All said, another great solid outing from Cease.

Brian Goodwin: 2-for-5, HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, BB, K

This was very clearly the Brian Goodwin game. Signed shortly after Luis Robert suffered his hamstring strain, Goodwin had spent the beginning of the season in AAA. Goodwin has been a pretty serviceable ballplayer throughout his career, and anything he can provide this team will be even more valuable for before. He continues the mantra we’ve seen all year: next man up. Whether it was Billy Hamilton, Jake Lamb, Yermin Mercedes, or Brian Goodwin, the value added from unsuspecting guys has been incredible.

Tim Anderson: 3-for-5, 2 RBI, 3 R

Anderson quietly had a really solid day at the top of the lineup, scoring three runs while driving in two of his own. The Sox’ leadoff hitter had struggled a bit recently, but had pushed his average back up to .299 and continues to serve as a strong catalyst for this team.

Adam Eaton, Jake Lamb, Leury Garcia, Danny Mendick: 3 H, 9 BB, 3 RBI

The bottom of the White Sox lineup was getting on base big time today to the tune of nine walks and three hits. And, according to Jeremy Frank, it’s been a long time since a team has done that. Love to see guys finding a way to produce.

Next Game

The White Sox and Tigers get back to action tomorrow afternoon, as Carlos Rodon will look to finish off a sweep of the Tigers before taking on the Astros and Rays later in the week. The Tigers’ starter is still TBD.

As always, the game can be viewed on NBC Sports Chicago, and it starts at 12:10 PM CT.
