Padres 4, White Sox 3: Five-Game Win Streak Ends on Swinging Bunt

by Brett Haffner
3 minutes read

With a second consecutive sweep on the line, the White Sox battled in a back-and-forth affair with the Padres, but couldn’t hold on, breaking their five-game winning streak.

On the bump, Anthony Kay breezed through his first three innings of work, but allowed two solo home runs in the fourth inning. A run scored on a passed ball aside, Kay did a solid job in navigating trouble, getting through five innings and looking much better than his last few appearances.

In a relatively quiet performance from the offense, some early goofs and gaffes on the basepaths certainly didn’t help ignite the fire. Sam Antonacci got caught by a country mile, maybe two, on an aggressive send at home, while Jared Kelenic got picked off at first base.

Meanwhile, known power hitters Drew Romo and Derek Hill provided the lone contributions to the runs scored, each smashing home runs to their name.

Bryan Hudson nearly got out of some trouble in the eighth inning to extend the 3-3 tie, but an excuse-me, sad, check-swing ‘bunt’ from Xander Bogaerts put the Padres on top.

Additionally, because this feels important: your favorite former Savannah Banana, Tristan Peters, had a common success by knocking a single off “The Reaper”, Mason Miller.

We also found out mid-game that Braden Montgomery got called up to Triple-A, so that gave us something to smile about.

W: Jason Adam (1-0, 2.00 ERA) | L: Tyler Davis (0-1, 2.25 ERA) | S: Mason Miller (11, 1.10 ERA)

Scoring Summary:

Key Performers

Derek Hill: 1-for-1, HR, RBI, 1 R

Will Venable played his cards right, deploying Hill into a key pinch-hit situation against Adrian Morejon. Hill made the most of his opportunity, launching the Sox’s first pinch-hit home run of the 2026 season, which ultimately tied the game up at three runs apiece.

Anthony Kay: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR

While he didn’t match the scoreless outings of Noah Schultz and Sean Burke this weekend, Anthony Kay certainly held his own with an improved outing compared to his last few appearances. His strikeouts (5) ticked up more than his past three outings combined (2, 1, and 1), which was a good sight to see.

Drew Romo: 1-for-3, HR, RBI, 1 R, 2 K

With yet another home run to his name in his short stint with the Southsiders, Romo is certainly making a case for himself to stick around on the roster going forward.

Next Game

The Sox are staying on the West Coast as they take on the Los Angeles Angels once again. For the second time in two weeks, Davis Martin (4-1, 1.95 ERA) will be taking on the Angels’ Jose Soriano (5-1, 0.84 ERA) in a battle of early-season bona fide aces. First pitch is set for 8:38 p.m. CT.
