Mike Shirley resigns as White Sox Amateur Scouting Director

In a surprising weekend announcement, the White Sox have announced that amateur scouting director Mike Shirley has resigned from his position with the team. According to The Athletic, Shirley resigned following an internal investigation into allegations of verbal harassment. Shirley was alleged to have made inappropriate racial comments and sexist comments about and in front of coworkers.

Per James Fegan of the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox organization has a policy of refraining from comment on personnel issues.

No indication of the direction the team will head in the wake of this news has been given.

Shirley was placed on administrative leave following an anonymous tip to the organization with concerns about his conduct at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California, last month. This is also not the first time the Shirley’s actions have been called into question. In an anonymous department survey done before the 2021 season, a portion of which was obtained by The Athletic, multiple employees at the time said they felt scouts from underrepresented groups were not treated equally and not given the same opportunities to advance as their counterparts under Shirley. Previous internal investigations did not uncover any bias in behavior or actions.

Shirley has worked with the White Sox for over two decades, initially joining the scouting department in 1999. He was named the assistant scouting director in 2018 under Nick Hostetler and replaced him as the amateur scouting director the next year. Since then, he has been praised for his work with the White Sox, specifically managing the White Sox draft strategies since 2020.

Under Shirley, the White Sox have seen more success drafting future MLB talent than in previous years. With him at the helm, the Sox have selected Garrett Crochet, Colson Montgomery, Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, Sam Antonacci, Caleb Bonemer, and most recently Roch Cholowsky. Chris Getz will have his hands full identifying a sufficient replacement heading into next season, especially in the wake of such a sudden change to the department.

This remains a developing story; we will update as more information becomes available or if the White Sox choose to make any comments regarding the allegations.
