Elvis Andrus open to White Sox return in 2023

by Joe Binder

Shortly after Johnny Cueto said he would be open to returning in 2023, another soon-to-be free agent shared the same sentiment.

Shortstop Elvis Andrus told media members in a post-game interview that he would be interested in rejoining the team if the opportunity presented itself. His comments come nearly two weeks after he expressed similar feelings in a 670 The Score interview.

“Everybody knows that the chances are open for me to come back next year,” Andrus said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

When asked whether or not he’d be willing to change positions to accommodate the Sox’s roster situation, the long-time shortstop expressed flexibility.

“If that’s what it is … if that’s the only option I have, moving from short to another position, I’d be more than happy. For me, it’s about playing and, at this point in my career, winning.”

Andrus, 34, was originally released by the Athletics on August 17 before the White Sox signed him just two days later. The veteran not only filled in defensively for the injured Tim Anderson but also provided a much-needed spark to the offense upon his arrival.

In 43 games, Andrus hit .271/.309/.464 (49-for-181) with nine home runs, 28 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 1.7 WAR. Aside from his lone appearance as a designated hitter, Andrus played the rest of his 42 games at shortstop, just as he’s done for the entirety of his 14-year career. The first-time free agent will now be testing the open waters to see if another team, preferably a contender, needs him up the middle at his native position.

Should the White Sox want to explore re-signing Andrus, he would surely be in the conversation for the starting second base job. Based on the current roster, it would appear the in-house options include Danny Mendick, Leury Garcia, Romy Gonzalez, and Lenyn Sosa. Josh Harrison is also another player to keep an eye on as he possesses a $5.5 million club option for 2023. With a relatively weak free-agent class at the position, Rick Hahn and Co. will have a decision to make as any of the aforementioned names are likely in play.
