Blue Jays 7, White Sox 3: Kopech Struggles, Offense Comes Up Short

by Thatcher Zalewski

Kopech found himself in some trouble early tonight. He gave up his first home run of the year on a lead-off home run to Santiago Espinal. Kopech only went three innings but gave up five runs on six hits, which has been his worst start of the year. Part of this may be due to the extended rest that Kopech had. Overall he did not have his stuff tonight, which cost the White Sox tonight.

However, on offense, some of the bats looked good tonight as the White Sox may have found their interim lead-off hitter in AJ Pollock. He started the scoring with his very own lead-off blast. This gave the White Sox an early lead, but it would be the time the club was on top tonight. Abreu also contributed to the scoring with his two-run shot.

The bullpen, for the most part, was pretty good tonight. Kyle Crick, who is up due to Graveman being put on the restricted list, pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Foster and Ruiz each put up a scoreless inning of their own. Sousa had some trouble as Vladimir Guerrero Jr took him deep to put the Blue Jays up by four.

With the loss, the White Sox fall to 22-24 on the season.

W: Ross Stripling (1-1) | L: Michael Kopech (1-2)

Notable Performances

AJ Pollock: 2-for-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 R

The White Sox may have found their new leadoff hitter for the foreseeable future as AJ Pollock started things off early and fast for the White Sox. He led off the game with a solo blast to give the White Sox a much-needed boost from that spot due to Anderson going down. Pollock also had a single later on in the game.

Jose Abreu: 2-for-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R

Abreu continued his hot streak and helped try and rally a comeback for the White Sox. He blasted a home run in the fourth, which only put the Sox down by two at the time. Ultimately his efforts weren’t enough to give the Sox a win but a good game from number 79.

The Next Matchup

The White Sox will look to avoid the series sweep tomorrow afternoon with Johnny Cueto taking the mound. The club will go up against Alek Manoah who has been very good for the Blue Jays this season.

The game can be viewed at 2:07 PM CT over on NBC Sports Chicago.
