Andrew Vaughn Suffers Hip Pointer Injury; Out 1-2 Weeks

The White Sox avoided the worst with Andrew Vaughn, who left yesterday’s game with what has been diagnosed as a hip pointer injury. He is expected to return to games in approximately 1-2 weeks; however, that timeline appears to be determined mostly by how Vaughn’s symptoms resolve themselves. This news was announced by the White Sox this morning.

As a reminder, this injury occurred during the bottom of the fourth when Vaughn appeared to make a typical diving play to rob Los Angeles’ Hanser Alberto. Following the catch, Vaughn held his right hip before popping up to give center fielder Luis Robert a high five. It was after he took a few steps that Vaughn began limping and signaled for the training staff to come out. Though able to stand on his own power, he was experiencing some discomfort before eventually being carted off the field.

Vaughn likely won’t miss too much of the start of the season, but assuming the White Sox are done adding to this team, this makes it more likely that Micker Adolfo is going to make the roster out of Spring Training. The 25-year-old, who is out of options, is hitting .500/.529/1.000 on the Spring in 14 at-bats. Incredibly, the 7 times he has gotten out this Spring Training have all been via the strikeout. This encapsulates perfectly what Adolfo brings to the table: a lot of power, and a lot of strikeouts. He likely isn’t the perfect solution for the White Sox, however, he is projected to earn his spot throughout the first few weeks of the season, especially considering rosters will expand to 28 players for the entirety of April.

We will continue to give updates as more becomes known on Vaughn’s developing situation, as well as when it will be time for him to return to the field. For now, we can all breathe a sign of relief that Vaughn avoided any long-term injury time.
