Postgame Report: Cubs 10, White Sox 8

by Mark Fordon

The White Sox lost the regular season finale to the Cubs by a score of 10-8. A late rally proved to not be enough for the White Sox, though they came roaring back from a 9 run deficit to make it 10-8 in the 9th with nobody out. The White Sox drop down to the 7th seed and will travel to Oakland to take on the Athletics in the first round of the MLB Playoffs.

W: Adbert Alzolay (1-1) L: Reynaldo Lopez (1-3)

Notable Performances

Adam Engel (2-4, 1B, HR, 2 RBI)

Adam Engel hit a solo homerun off Alzolay in the bottom of the 5th inning. It was the only mistake Alzolay made on the day as he struck out 8.

Yasmani Grandal (2-4, 3 RBI, 1 HR)

Yasmani Grandal made things a little closer in the bottom of the 9th when he hit a 2-run homerun off Duane Underwood Jr. This homer made the score 10-8 with nobody out.

Luis Robert (3-5, 1 RBI, 1 K)

A bright spot in this game was Luis Robert seeming to break out of his slump, knocking 3 base hits to go along with an RBI. This is big considering the White Sox will rely on him heavily for this playoff run.

Moment of the Game

Yasmani Grandal’s two run home run in the 9th inning gave the Sox hope that they could come back and win the game. That ultimately didn’t happen, but it was a good sign seeing that Ricky’s boys still don’t quit.

Player of the Game

I went with Luis Robert based on his ability to see fastballs today and hit them well. He hit into spots where the defense wasn’t and it was nice to see him start getting a feel for the bat again. Hopefully he continues to see the ball like he did today going into the first round series.

Looking Ahead

The White Sox will take on the Oakland Athletics on the road to start the playoffs with a three- game series on Tuesday. They are scheduled to play Tuesday, Wednesday, and – if necessary – Thursday. Lucas Giolito and Sean Manaea are the likely starters, though neither has been confirmed as of yet.
