White Sox Update – December 17, 2018

by Joe Binder

Monday was an action-packed day as Yonder Alonso and Manny Machado owned the White Sox headlines.

    • According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Dodgers are not willing to offer Bryce Harper a long-term, record-setting contract. In his latest article, he wrote the following:
    • Later in the day, Rosenthal also reported news about potential White Sox free agent target, Michael Brantley.

The 2-year, $32 million deal became official a short time later, thus eliminating Brantley from the market. The former Indian would have been a nice short-term addition to the White Sox while they await the arrival of some of their younger outfield prospects.

    • Newly acquired Yonder Alonso met with the media for the first time since being traded. Here are a few of his quotes, which included plenty of talk about his brother-in-law, Manny Machado:
    • Speaking of Manny Machado, the free agent visited with the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on Monday afternoon. Spotted with him walking into the stadium were his wife, agent, and Rick Renteria. It is believed that the White Sox pitch to Machado was based heavily on the future and loaded farm system, among other things.

Machado is also expected to meet with both the Yankees and Phillies later on in the week so it doesn’t appear that he will sign a deal until those are complete.
