Tale of the Tape: Angels 6, White Sox 5

by Jordan Lazowski

Hector Santiago and Jimmy Cordero started this game out strong, but Evan Marshall imploded in the 7th, and the White Sox dropped one that was firmly in their control. With the loss, the White Sox fell to 55-67 on the season.

Moment of the Game

I want to give the moment of this game to Mike Schur’s entire broadcast appearance. After the absolute insanity that was Bill Walton’s broadcast last night, Mike Schur brought us back to reality. He is an incredibly knowledgable baseball fan, and he and Benetti actually worked well together. If you get a chance to listen to any of the broadcast again, do it. It was a pleasure to listen to him.

Stats On 35th: Let’s Break this one down By the Numbers

Last Night’s Numbers:

19.1/-63.7, 88.3, 10, 2, 32

19.1/-63.7

Last night’s MVP and LVP, in terms of Win Probability Added (WPA) were James McCann (19.1%) and Evan Marshall (-63.7%). Neither of these were surprises – James McCann was 2-for-4 with a big RBI double that, at the time, looked to give the White Sox a solid lead. Evan Marshall, however, could not locate the strike zone, serving up the lead and earning this dubious honor.

88.3

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the White Sox’ Win Expectancy (WE) was up at 88.3%. That quickly fell to 19% by the end of the inning, completing an almost 70 percentage point swing in just one-half inning. Yikes.

10

With his third inning home run, Eloy Jimenez tied Alexei Ramirez for 10th on the all-time Rookie home run list for the White Sox with 21 home runs. The next men to pass: Pete Ward and Tommy Magee, who hit 22 homers in 1963 and 1966, respectively. Realistically, Jimenez had the chance to at least tie third place Daniel Palka’s 2018 mark of 27 by the end of the season.

2

The White Sox lost just their second game of the season when leading after six innings this season. Before this game, they were 42-1 when leading after six.

32

After this loss, the White Sox have now scored 32 runs in the last eight games. Alas, they are only 2-2 over that span of games.
